Terrific Toddlers
Even from the age of 2 years old a child can learn that certain behaviours are acceptable and others not. As soon as a child can communicate, and respond to suggestion, they can begin to learn the basic building blocks that will form the foundation of their social mannerisms.
This process takes time, and can only bear fruit when applied with patience, love and sometimes seemingly endless repetition. Making the introduction to these fundamentals fun, exciting and creatively stimulating is essential in order to foster a desire to learn. Praise and positive affirmation are both tools and by-products of the Terrific Toddler program.
All of our lessons contain creative and diverse elements. Songs, role-playing games, rhymes and puppets are a few of the tools that are used to stimulate the children, and keep their attention. The songs are easy to learn, catchy, and designed to reinforce at home what the child learns in the class.
Included in the Programme are the following:
- Greetings - "Hello, Goodbye, Good-Morning and Good-Night": This includes hand-shaking (where age-appropriate) and what to do when someone walks into, or leaves the room.
- Washing your hands, keeping clean: This refers mostly in relation to meal-times, basic hygiene and being aware of one's own personal space.
- "Please, thank-you and sorry" the 3 most magical words: Introducing these three words in a practical way, showing the need for consideration for others and how they feel.
- Having fun at the table (and still keeping your food on the plate)!: This lesson involves handling a fork and spoon, eating small portions and trying to keep your plate, cup and cutlery in the right areas.
- Mouth full? No talking! : This game is a lot of fun, and includes the basic principle of chewing with your mouth closed - from broccoli to bubblegum (not that we'd give the kids either!)
- Sitting up straight, elbows off the table: This may sound extreme for toddlers, but the need for good posture at the table is not only because it looks good, but because it aids in digestion. How many kids have you seen eating resting their heads in their hands, hunched over their plates? As long as we teach our kids how then they will. Maybe not immediately - but they'll get there.
- Accidents happen - what do we do? : Making a mistake, or a mess, will happen. It is how we as parents react to these mishaps that will determine our child’s response to a 'mini-crisis'. Cleaning up our own mess, and helping others to do the same is not a chore, but can be a valuable part of teaching responsibility and self-confidence.
- Playground rules: How to share, be fair and simply get along. Let's be honest, these are toddlers we are talking about! Kids will be kids, but laying the foundation of considerate and gentle behaviour is absolutely necessary to develop toddlers into well balanced pre-schoolers. It's hard for kids to see why they should share, until it becomes something that they enjoy and want to do.
